The exhibition “We speak Russian. The golden collection of the Russian language dictionaries and vocabularies” is open at the Library’s Reading Room for Catalogs, Reference and Bibliographic Literature (Room 2001) from October 17 till November 24, 2016.
The display is dedicated to the Day of Dictionaries and Encyclopedias celebrated on November22 in Russia. The diversity of the Russian language dictionaries at the exhibition is amazing: From classical publications - those compiled by Vladimir Dahl, D. N Ushakov, S.I. Ozhegov - to the newest works.
Grammatical dictionaries and guides on orthography, pronunciation, accentuation, as well as culture of speech and speaking etiquette dictionaries are on display. “The encyclopedic dictionary of two-letter words” by D.V. Salomatin will become an eye-opener for every erudite and the intellectually curious people who are always eager to deepen their knowledge and to extend their vocabulary.

Chess Culture and Information Center turned 10!
The ceremony on the 10-th anniversary of the Chess Culture and Information Center of the Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology (RNPLS&T) was held on October 12, on RNPLS&T’s premises.
At the anniversary meeting, the new book by the oldest world grandmaster and world champion Yury Averbakh “In search for truth: From chatarunga through the ages” was presented. .
Dr. Yakov Shrayberg, RNPLST Director General, opened the meeting. He remarked on the fruitful work of the Center through the decade and reviewed the Center’s plans to establish permanent contacts and cooperation with secondary schools: “Of course, this will require to change our incorporation documents but we are ready to go there. Lectures, tours, contests, themed meetings – everything that would motivate secondary school students”, - Dr. Shrayberg said.

Besides Zhurova, Alikhan Yandiev, FIDE Chief Presidential Adviser, Marina Mukabenova, First Deputy Chair of the Committee for Information Policy, Information Technologies and Relations, Igor Zubov, Deputy Interior Minister, and others. New vectors of the RNPLS&T’s Chess Center development were introduced. Nikolay Kralin, Center Director, international grandmaster for chess composition said that the next year, the year of the 95-th anniversary of Yury Averbakh, international grandmaster, is to be devoted to his name and Averbakh’s school would become the school of intellectual games.
Meanwhile, the Chess Culture and Information Center is to start the authorial program “Black Square, or From Simple to Complex” that is aimed to introduce chess game as a curriculum discipline within the education system. N. Kralin says that the program is calculated for 345 hours of study. Beside Black Square program, N. Kralin names the following vectors: “Chess for brain building”, “chess as sport”, “chess to prevent teenage and old age diseases” to be implemented by the Center.
In cooperation with the chess museum of the Russian Chess Federation, Chess Culture and Information Center launches a new project to enable users reading rare themed publications in digital format: “Books die like humans. The idea is to enable you not only to browse through a book digitally but also to listen to the comments of a chess master”, - Dmitry Oleynikov, secretary of the Russian Chess Federation Chess Museum, said.
Unique greeting was delivered by Vladimir Linder, chess historian and writer, who spoke in the played the role of Ostap Bender. On the occasion of the jubilee, diplomas “For the great contribution to the RNPLS&T Chess Culture and Information Center’ were awarded to the prominent Center workers: Yury Averbakch, Nikolay Kralin, and S. Voronkov, chess historian.
The first presentation of Yury Averbakh’s new book: “In search for truth: From chatarunga through the ages” published by RNPLS&T was also held. RNPLS&T Chess Culture and Information Center was established in 2006 as the Chess Information Office to provide chess information services to the public, and primarily to schoolchildren, university students, and pedagogues in chess education. The Center’s collection embraces approx. 3,000 book items and up to 5,500 copies of periodicals. The business library (before 2014, Business Information Office) with the collection of over 25,000 books and approx. 25,000 copies of domestic periodicals, makes the part of the Chess Culture Center.
Annual meeting of the heads of Russian federal and central regional libraries opened on October 18 on the premises of the Russian State Library.
Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, jointly with the Russian State Library, National Library of Russia and M.I. Rudomino All-Russian State Library for Foreign Literature act as the meeting organizers.
Over 300 participants are attending the meeting. Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology is represented by Dr. Yakov Shrayberg, Director General, Victor Zverevich, Assistant to Director General in Charge of Information Analytics, Elena Lindeman, Deputy Director General in Charge for Research, Methodological Studies, Education and Publishing, Svetlana Zolotinskaya, Head of Marketing and PR Department, and Kristina Bakhmudova, Press Secretary.
"The meeting has become the site to determine the role of libraries on modern society, to discuss libraries’ goals in the digital world, to resolve strategic problems of education and mentoring, of cultural heritage preservation”, - Vladimir Aristarkhov, First Deputy Minister of Culture greeted the organizers and participants on behalf of Minster Vladimir Medinsky.
On the meeting first day, the attendees focused on the changes in the library legislation, issues of the New National Library Association “Libraries of the Future” (NALF) and National Electronic Library (NEL), and kids’ reading, and libraries’ adapting to the needs of disabled users. The RF Ministry of Culture presented current general statistics for the library industry in 2016. Besides, the results of three All-Russian library contests were announced: Librarian of the Year -2016, "Library Analytics - 2016" and "The Best Professional Book ".
On October 14, 2016, representatives of SS Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Post-graduate Studies visited RNPLS&T.
RNPLS&T’s Division of Education Programs librarians took the guests for the tour of the Library’s reading rooms and museums. The guests got familiar with Catalog and Reference & Bibliographic Literature Reading Rooms, visited the Reading Room of the Literature for Priority Sci-tech Studies.
The visitors were impressed by the exhibition display of the Library Retro and Chess Culture Museum.
They also visited several other Library’s departments, including Collection Digitization and Scanning Department, Conservation Department and LAN Hardware Support Department.
On April 11-13 in Bournemouth (Great Britain) there was the 39th Annual Conference and Exhibition UKSG that annually attracts near 1000 delegates from all over the world – librarians, publishers and content providers. Leading world scientific publishing houses and providers such as EBSCO, IEEE, Explore, OCLC, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Springer Nature, ACS Publications, ProQuest, Elsevier and others are the sponsors of the Conference and participants of the Exhibition.RNPLS&T consisting of Galina A. Evstigneeva, Deputy General director, and E.V. Marinosyan, Head of department, visited the publishing exhibition with the aim to negotiate with publishers about possibilities of usage of scientific resources within National subscription of Ministry of education and science of Russia. RNPLS&T is its operator.
On April 21, 2016 in the room of ecological information of RNPLS&T there was first theoretical lesson of course on general ecology “Ecology – science about home”.
The audiences learned about resources of the room of ecological information, worked with literature on ecological subjects and listened to lecture “Introduction in ecology. Basic concepts and laws” (speaker – Lidia Belyayeva, bio-ecologist, expert of Coalition “Pro Wastes”).
Organizers of the event: Coalition “Pro Wastes” and scientific and consulting department of ecological information of RNPLS&T.
During the lesson the audience discussed how “ecology” appeared and develops; learned about such terms as “eco-system”, “biome”, “consumers”, “ecological niche” etc; saw “Liebig's barrel” and learned how it looks like for contemporary man.
Next theoretical lesson of the course will be on April 28, 2016.
On April 20, 2016 in RNPLS&T there was meeting with representatives of Scientific and publishing center INFRA-M – V.M. Prudnikov, Chief Editor, P.A. Berberov, Director of EBS, and E.G. Uspanova, Head of Sales Department of EBS.
At the meeting RNPLS&T was presented by the following persons: Yakov L. Shrayberg, General Director, Deputy General directors: Boris I. Marshak, for science and informatization, Galina A. Evstigneeva, for library work, E.V. Lindeman, for science and methodical, education and publishing activity, Mikhail V. Goncharov, Head of department, Marina N. Ivanova, Head of department, I.V. Mikhaylenko, Head of department, and I.I. Mikhaylenko, Senior research associate.
Representatives of INFRA-M made presentation of projects of their scientific and publishing center. In particular they presented digital and library system (EBS) Znanium.com – the common digital environment for education and science in universities and libraries, for teachers and students all over Russia and abroad.
Also at the meeting they issues of possible cooperation of INFRA-M and RNPLS&T in the sphere of information resources.
Agreement of provision to RNPLS&T of test access to EBS Znanium.com for one month to study readers’ demand, was the result of the meeting.
On April 20, 2-16 in the room of ecological information of RNPLS&T there was Eco-lesson with pupils of 8-G class of school №1288 (SP №5) dedicated to the issues of climate changes.
At the lesson presentation “Meteorological reporter” – “Meteorology and hydrology”: 125th anniversary of scientific magazine” was showed to the pupils and research work “Climate change observations” was made with them using publications from this magazine of different years. Pupils learned to work with information materials and studied basic concepts of their systematization. The event was organized and moderated by employees of scientific and consulting department of ecological information.
On Tuesday, April 19, 2016, Yakov L. Shrayberg, General director of RNPLS&T, specially invited by Magistracy and Doctorate of Moscow Patriarchy of Russian Orthodox Church, spoke to the students with lecture “Open access: world tendencies and Russian reality”. In his lecture Yakov L. Shrayberg defined Open access to information resources, made historical review of development, modern conditions and tendencies of development of Open access in the world and in Russia, and analyzed some projects of RNPLS&T connected with Open access.
Lecture of Yakov L. Shrayberg arouse much interest among the audience. The students actively asked questions. It was obvious that the offered subject of lecture is quite interesting and unknown for many of them. Lecture of Yakov L. Shrayberg in Magistracy and Doctorate of Moscow Patriarchy was of constructive and friendly atmosphere. It was decided to make the meetings of the leading specialists of RNPLS&T and master’s students and candidates of Moscow Patriarchy of Russian Orthodox Church traditional. The next meeting is to be this May after the Resurrection Sunday.
On April 14, 2016 in A.P. Gaydar Central City library for children there was City seminar for librarians servicing children “Green library”: to be continued.
The program of the seminar included handing certificates of Academy of additional training for workers of arts, culture and tourism about advanced training to the participants of seminars “Role of libraries in information provision for solving ecological problems”. In total 20 participants received the certificates. Elena F. Bychkova, A.V. Kryukova and A.A. Matochenko, employees of scientific and consulting department of ecological information of RNPLS&T, took part in the event.
