Four Russian universities are in U.S. News & World Report Focus rating, two of them are the leading universities of Project 5-100.
To appear among the ranged universities of U.S. News & World Report rating, a university should be in the top 200 under the results of Academic Reputation Survey that is organized by Thomson Reuters Company annually. The number of scientific publications in scientific magazines indexed in Web of Science database for 5 years is the second criteria.
This year Russian Universities are placed in the Focus Physics rating as following: MSU is on the 23rd line, National research nuclear University is on the 127th line, Novosibirsk National research state university – on the 170th, and St. Petersburg state university – on the 241st line.
Also National research nuclear University, member of Project 5-100, is on the 20th place in the world for share of publications of international co-authoring.
U.S. News Best Global Universities rating reflects reputation in scientific society, publication activity (books and conference materials are counted separately), joint research with foreign scientists, conferment of scientific degrees by universities and other factors, in total there are 12 of them. Data for index calculation are taken from InCites – it is an online tool for evaluation and comparison of scientific organizations and researches on the basis of sciento-metrical information of Web of Science data base. Each university has its own profile webpage at usnews.com , where all 12 indexes are indicated.
Online education can be equal to full-time in Russia
In accordance with the materials of the edition, Ministry of education and science prepares normative base according to which the students after remote study of any course or subject could present their results in educational institution and it should accept them.
It is highlighted that many leading world universities use online education and launch them in education process actively for a long time already. According to the Department, such period allows a university to be competitive at the world market of education services.
In accordance with the information of the edition, Ministry of education and science support development of online education highlighting that it assists a student to build an individual education program and allows getting additional professional knowledge in the chosen sphere.
It is also highlighted that online education is to add and expand classic format of education but not to replace it entirely.
List of top 500 schools of Russia is announced
Leading public servants and experts in the sphere of education announce the top list
St. Petersburg “Presidential lyceum №239 for physic and mathematics”, Saransk “Republic lyceum for talented children” and Moscow “School №57” are on the first three lines of top 500 Russian schools 2015.
Moscow center of continuous mathematical education with information support of project “Social navigator” of International News Agency “Russia today” and “teacher newspaper” supported by Ministry of education and science of the RF prepared the top list of 500 best schools of Russia.
The schools from the list showed high educational results in 2014-2015 school years according to Basic state exam (BSE) for nine-year-pupils and academic competitions results. Percentage of nine-year pupils who passed BSE in Moscow, Kaliningrad, Republic of Khakassia, Tambov and Lipetsk regions is higher than others’ from the list. “Presidential lyceum №239 for physic and mathematics” (St. Petersburg), “Republic lyceum for talented children” (Saransk, Republic of Mordovia) and Moscow “School №57” (Moscow) are on the first three liens of top 25 of schools in 2014-2015 school years. Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tatarstan, Chelyabinsk and Moscow regions are leaders of top 500 with number of schools from regions. Schools of Crimea and Sevastopol are in the list of “best schools of Russia” of 2015 too.
Nobel award for literature
None of Russian language writers received this award since 1987
Sara Danius, New permanent secretary of Swedish Academy, announced the name of the laureate of the Nobel award in literature of 2015. Academicians adjudged the prestigious award to Svetlana Aleksievich, Belorussian writer and journalist, “for vociferous sounds of her prose and remembrance of suffering and courage”. Solemn awarding ceremony shall take place in Stockholm on December 10.
Thus the forecasts of the bookmakers who called Svetlana Aleksievich the most probable applicant to receive the Nobel award in literature, became true. Also among the favorites there were Haruki Murakami, Japanese writer and translator, and Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, writer and play writer from Kenia, who now lives in USA, who, together with other 195 applicants, in the result were left behind by Belorussian writer and journalist. The amount of the award of 2015 made 8 mln of Swedish crowns – more than 950 000 USD.
Svetlana Aleksievich was born in Ukraine and now is a citizen of Belarus, she lives in Minsk and widely famous with her books written on the borders of fiction and non-fiction: “War is not of woman’s face”, “Chernobyl prayer”, “Zinc boys” and “Second hand time”. By the way Svetlana Aleksievich could receive one of the most reputable international awards in literature in 2013, but then the award was received by Alice Munro from Canada.
Nobel award in the sphere of chemistry was given for research of mechanism of DNA recovery
According to TASS, as it was announced by Nobel committee at Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Wednesday, Nobel award in the sphere of chemistry was given to Thomas Lindal, Paul Modric and Aziz Sankara for research of mechanism of DNA recovery.
In 2014 the award for chemistry was received by W. Hell, Eric Betzig and William E. Moerner for new methods of high-accuracy microscopy that left behind the possibilities of light microscope. Lenta.ru reminds that their researches allow to visualize ways of separate molecules inside living cells.
Traditionally in Stockholm on December 10, on the day of death of Alfred Nobel, there will be official awarding ceremony. The laureates will be awarded by Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden.
This year the amount of monetary award will make near 950 000 USD (for all laureates in physics). Reduction of the award (that usually makes not less than 1 mln USD) is connected with rate volatility.
Vladimir Medinsky took part in Russian Lesson of Victory
Russian lesson dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory, took place today in Situation and information center of Federal Education and Science supervision service. The lesson was headed by Dmitry Livanov, Minister of education and science of the RF, and Vladimir Medinsky, Minister of culture of the RF, Chairman of Russian Military historical society.
Speaking at opening ceremony of the Russian lesson Vladimir Medinsky thanked participants of the Great Patriotic war and told about difficulties that were suffered by his relative during war years.
Vladimir Medinsky, Chairman of Russian Military historical society, told: “Listening to my father’s stories I understood how much our fathers and grandfathers had experienced and built our great country then; and we gave life to our children thanks to them. That’s exactly why we understand that the war came through every family in our country”. He also reminded that losses of the Soviet Union during the years of the Great Patriotic war made 27 mln of people and highlighted that Russians shall understand that for the fighting partners – Americans and British people – it was the World war, and for Russia – Holy war, National Great Patriotic war.
Cities of Military glory – St. Petersburg, Volgograd and Sevastopol - also connected to the video conference in Moscow. Heads of regions and veterans of the Great Patriotic war spoke there. Also there was live broadcast from Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow and from Berlin. Dmitry Livanov, Minister of education and science of the RF, started Month of Victory, during which pupils of the whole country will visit museums and memorable places, and take part in patriotic actions. It is also planned to open an interactive project on the official portal of the Ministry of education in the form of a special section “Lesson of Victory”.
Russian Military Historical society and Rotourism realize patriotic program “Roads of Victory” during which since September 2014 there will be free bus excursions for pupils to the places of war and historical heritage of Moscow and Moscow region.
More than 30 000 pupils already took part in the program, and till the end of the year 150 000 pupils will do this. 13 museums of Moscow and Moscow region are the participants of the program. State Historical museum, Central museum of the Great Patriotic war at Poklonnaya Hill, open air museum “Borodino field” , Central Russian Federation Armed Forces museum and State Military technical museum are among them.
Russian lesson of Victory
Dmitry Livanov started Month of Victory in all schools of the country as a part of Russian lesson.
Today in Situation and information center of Federal Education and Science supervision service, Dmitry Livanov and Vladimir Medinsky, Ministers, headed Russian unique lesson of Victory in the Great Patriotic war. Cities of Military glory also connected to the video conference in Moscow.
According to Dmitry Livanov, Ministry of education and science of the RF, in 2020 pupils of ninth year shall have six exit exams, and foreign language will be compulsory as mathematics and Russian language.
Interfax cites Mr Livanov: “It seems to me that as English exam will be compulsory at 2020, foreign language shall be compulsory. Other three shall be discussed, may be they will be at the option. Thus the Minister commented the discussion in profile committee of the State Duma in the beginning of March about increase of number of exit exams for the pupils of the ninth year”.
He added that from his point of view, there is no need to make six compulsory exams. Let us remind that before it was informed that after Unified State Ministry of Education and Science of the RF offered to reform state exams for nine-year pupils seriously: in 2016 to make each nine-year pupil to have four exams instead of two, and six exams in 2020.
As Natalia Tretyak, First deputy Minister, explained, today nine-year pupils have two obligatory subjects only: mathematics and Russian language. They don’t have to pass third and fourth exams at option yet. But in Ministry they are not content with the tendency that pupils pass obligatory exams only and reject from subjects at option.
Profile committee of the State Duma supported the offer to make obligatory exams for nine-year pupils in general.
Russian universities rush to world ratings
According to plans five Russian universities shall enter the top hundred world education institutions till 2020.
Project 5-100 was launched in May 2013 by the Order of the president № 599 “About means for realization of state policy in the sphere of education and science”. The aim of the project is not only to increase quality of students’ education but also to provide serious positions of our universities in special world ratings.
15 universities participate in the project from the very beginning: Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, National University of Science and technology, National research University Higher School of Economics, Ural Federal University, St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University and others. Once a year each university has to protect its right to participate in the program.
Reorganization of higher education became the main subject for discussion both by professionals and users of education services long ago. Today the main task of the leading universities of Russia is to appear in the list of top hundred world universities till 2020.
On March 20-21 universities that participate in the project 5-100 protect in Tomsk “road maps” prepared by themselves – so called annual plans of events to increase competitiveness.
The Board for competitiveness of the leading universities of the Russian Federation among the leading world scientific and education centers will decide in accordance with content of the road maps if the list of the participants of the project will change or not, and how to distribute budget for 2015-2015 for them.
Moscow State University is in the list of prestige universities of the world
Moscow and St. Petersburg State Universities are included in the first hundred of prestige universities of the world. According to Lenta.ru Moscow State University is on the 25th line of the reputation rate.
The research was prepared by Times Higher Education British magazine. Rate of world universities is measured since 2011. Moscow State University never was on such a high line: last year foreign education centers pushed it into the sixtieth lines. This year St. Petersburg University came out on ninetieth lines of the rate.
Universities are ranged in accordance with the results of interrogation of 10,5 thousands of professors from 142 countries. Teaching experience shall not be less than 15 – it’s one of the terms for participants of the interrogation. The magazine warns that universities rank is a reputable but inexact mark as built on scientists’ perception of university’s brand.
Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford are top three traditionally. Princeton, Yale and Berkley are in the first ten ones.Before the magazine presented rating of universities in accordance with teaching level. In this list of 2013 Moscow State University was in the group of universities between 226 and 250 lines, and in 2014-2015 was on 196 line
