The round table «Digital information, libraries, and the society»

On February 8, 2019, the working meeting on the issues of transforming libraries and library systems in the modern circumstances, took place with the participation of Prof. Yakov Shrayberg, Dr. Sc. (Engineering), Director General of the Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology. The round table was attended by the staff and specialists of the V. Belinsky State Regional Scientific Library, N. Ostrovsky Regional Special Library for the Blind, Regional Centralized Library System libraries of Kaluga, K. Tsiolkovsky State University, Bauman Moscow State Technological University, Kaluga Branch of Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, Tsiolkovsky State Museum of Cosmonautics, and others.

Within the framework of the round table «Digital information, libraries, and the society», Dr. Yakov Shrayberg spoke on the modern society in the conditions of digital information revolution and the book market transformation, on e-libraries, library-users interaction, and the future for the libraries in the digital epoch. He also gave his special attention to the national subscription issues, and the Electronic Catalog of the Libraries in the System of Education and Science (EKBSON). Dr. Shrayberg emphasized that RNPLS&T was facing the task of building the Open Archive unified system.

Maria Konovalova, Director of N. Ostrovsky Regional Special Library for the Blind, shared the experience of establishing the department for library and information processes computerization, and reminded that Dr. Shrayberg had been providing support to the Special Library by offering participation in the international Crimean conferences, training, internships at RNPLS&T to the Library staff, but he also provided charity support to the orphanages in Kaluga region. The participants took the chance to ask their questions on e-libraries and IRBIS64 operation.

During the round table, the suggestion was made to involve library IT-specialists in the work of the World Professional Forum «The book. Culture. Education. Innovations» («Crimea») and the International Conference and Exhibition «Information technologies, computer system and publications for libraries» (LIBCOM).

In conclusion, Yakov Shrayberg presented information materials of the Fourth World Professional Forum «Crimea-2018» to Lyudmila Solodun, Director of K. Tsiolkovsky State University Library, Elena Borozdina, Director of the Library of the Financial University Kaluga Branch, Lyudmila Yakovleva, Head of Literature Processing Department of Belinsky State Regional Scientific Library, and other professionals.
