The exhibition "Karl Andreevich Yanish. Classic of Russian chess"

From April 1 to April 29, 2022, an exhibition of literature "Karl Andreevich Yanish. Russian Russian Chess Classic", dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the death of the outstanding chess player, public figure, writer and mathematician Karl Andreevich Yanish (1813-1872).

Karl Yanish belongs to the galaxy of the first Russian masters. "There are not many names in the chess world that enjoy such wide and well–deserved fame as the name of our compatriot Karl Andreevich Yanish," Mikhail Chigorin wrote about him.

Janisch possessed extraordinary analytical abilities. His first theoretical work "The Discovery of a Chess Knight in the Game", published in French in 1837 in St. Petersburg, was later called by the Chigorin magazine "Chess Leaf" "a classic work of chess literature". Even more impressive was Janisch's work "A New Analysis of the Principles of the Chess Game" (1842-1843, in French), which summed up the achievements of domestic and world debut thought.
As a professor of mathematics, Karl Andreevich paid much attention to the study of chess using mathematical methods. His "Treatise on the application of mathematical analysis to the Chess game" is devoted to this problem. Yanish also studied chess composition, which he called "the poetic creativity of chess."
Yanish has done a lot to popularize chess in Russia. He was one of the founders of the St. Petersburg Chess Club, the author of the "Charter of the Society of chess lovers in St. Petersburg" (1853) – the first Russian chess code. Since 1856, he led the first permanent chess department in Russia in the newspaper "St. Petersburg Vedomosti".
