Technologies for health
The materials presented at the exhibition cover a wide range of issues in the field of medical biotechnology, cellular and genetic engineering, including the achievements of genetic engineering in the production of recombinant drugs, selective allergens and reagents for modern diagnostic methods. The publications reflect the results of research in the field of technology for obtaining new biomedical drugs, the prospects for the use of nanotechnology in the creation of new medicines are considered. An overview of current developments in biotechnological production in the field of vaccines, bacteriophages, bacterial preparations that normalize the human microflora, antibiotics, vitamins and enzyme preparations is given, their importance for human health is shown.
During the preparation of the exhibition, publications from the SPSTB Foundation of Russia were used: monographs, educational and methodological manuals, articles from specialized journals, collections of reports and conference materials, abstracts of dissertations, as well as publications from the Springer publishing house full-text database, articles from the electronic journals "Molecular Pharmaceuticals", "Biotechnology Progress", "Preparatory Biochemistry and Biotechnology", "Nature Methods". The materials of the exhibition can be useful to graduate students, students and teachers, as well as specialists working in the field of regenerative medicine, medical materials science, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals.

Abstract: In the early 1960s, Siberia became the "cradle" of a fundamentally new direction in molecular biology and pharmacology, which was far ahead of its time. The idea, implemented by a group of Novosibirsk researchers led by D. G. Knorre, was to create biologically active substances aimed directly at the genetic targets of DNA and RNA. Such substances were oligonucleotides fragments of nucleic acids capable of specifically binding to their complementary sequences. With the help of such "antisense" drugs, it became possible to suppress the reproduction of bacteria and viruses, as well as regulate the work of genes in cells of higher organisms, including in tumor cells. Nowadays, a large research and industrial sector of the economy is engaged in the development and synthesis of oligonucleotides and their modified analogues. Antiviral and anti-inflammatory drugs created on their basis are undergoing clinical trials, and some are already being used in medical practice. In particular, "at home" antisense technologies are developing drugs that effectively block genes responsible for drug resistance of cancer cells and pathogenic microorganisms.

The use of modern nanomaterials in the described methods of analysis is considered. DNA-based bioaffinity methods provide the determination of pharmaceuticals without prior separation of components with high sensitivity and selectivity, as well as the assessment of the biological activity of new compounds in relation to DNA. Methods for the determination of low- and high-molecular biologically active substances that are DNA effectors are described.

Abstract: The first clinical experiments with bacterial viruses began almost a century ago - almost immediately after their discovery. It seemed that this new method of therapy was doomed to success: it was flawless from a scientific point of view, and the results of its application were promising. However, fragmentary knowledge of the biology of viruses and the lack of key molecular technologies in those distant years did not allow us to fully unlock the therapeutic potential of organisms that are not visible even in a light microscope. With the advent of antibiotics, interest in phage therapy, especially in Western countries, was almost lost. Why, in recent decades, have the world started talking about medical bacteriophages again? Why is it that the wonderful idea of using their natural enemies to destroy pathogenic bacteria has not yet been fully implemented? Both practitioners and their patients today should clearly understand not only the essence, but also all the strengths and weaknesses of this type of therapy, which has every chance to become part of the personalized medicine of the future.

Abstract: The emergence of methods of manipulating genetic material marked a real revolution in biology, biotechnology and medicine. Targeted intervention in the genome of living organisms has allowed solving a wide range of tasks, ranging from the creation of modified species of bacteria, plants and animals with new valuable properties, and cellular models necessary for the creation of new drugs, to the development of gene therapy methods that open up prospects for correcting congenital genetic disorders. But in order to successfully invade the "holy of holies" of a cell – its hereditary material, technologies are needed that allow splitting and connecting DNA molecules in given areas. Truly, a revolutionary breakthrough in this field occurred only a few years ago, when a simple method of genetic engineering CRISPR/Cas was developed based on the mechanisms of "bacterial immunity", providing an accurate effect on the specified DNA sites. This method has opened up fundamentally new possibilities for manipulations at the genome level of higher organisms, allowing point mutations to be introduced, corrected, embedded or deleted fragments and even whole genes.

Abstract: By functional analysis of shh paralog enhancers a reconstruction model for enhancer divergence during vertebrate evolution was developed. Our model suggests that the identified motifs of the ar-C enhancer function as binary switches responsible for specific activity between midline tissues and that these motifs are adjusted during functional diversification of paralogs. The unravelled motif changes can also account for the complex interpretation of activator and repressor input signals within a single enhancer.

Abstract: This volume presents the proceedings of the 15th ICMBE held from 4th to 7th December 2013, Singapore. Biomedical engineering is applied in most aspects of our healthcare ecosystem. From electronic health records to diagnostic tools to therapeutic, rehabilitative and regenerative treatments, the work of biomedical engineers is evident. Biomedical engineers work at the intersection of engineering, life sciences and healthcare. The engineers would use principles from applied science including mechanical, electrical, chemical and computer engineering together with physical sciences including physics, chemistry and mathematics to apply them to biology and medicine. Abstract: The textbook provides information about modern methods of obtaining medicines in the conditions of industrial biopharmaceutical production. The greatest attention is paid to biotechnological aspects of antibiotic production. The methods of isolation of antibiotic-producing microorganisms from the soil, their identification by cultural and morphological characteristics and storage of producing microorganisms are described in detail. Microbiological methods for determining the sensitivity and concentration of antibiotics are presented. Information is given on the industrial production of drugs of various pharmacological groups (vitamins and coenzymes, amino acids, steroid hormones, etc.) using biotechnology. Examples of obtaining recombinant structures in laboratory conditions are shown. Technological techniques used to assess the quality of finished vaccines are considered, data on microbial biotechnology are presented, material on probiotics, their properties and biotechnological potential of probiotic microorganisms is presented, their importance for human health is shown. The textbook contains all the necessary program materials for the course of pharmaceutical biotechnology by students of medical universities. To facilitate the assimilation of the material, the manual contains a reference dictionary with comments.

Abstract: Through this monograph, the pharmaceutical chemist gets familiar with the possibilities electroanalytical methods offer for validated analyses of drug compounds and pharmaceuticals.
