Methods of astrophysical research
The exhibition is devoted to research methods in theoretical and observational astrophysics. The exhibition presents materials on spectroscopy and astrophotometry methods, on the development of numerical techniques for modeling self-gravitating objects, on instruments and optical systems for astrophysical research. Different models of telescopes, their design and capabilities are described. Special attention should be paid to the book by David Devorkin "Cosmos. Unique images of the Hubble telescope with a collection of portraits of the most significant and original space objects, the study of which formed the basis of bold scientific theories.
During the preparation of the exhibition, publications from the fund of the Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology were used: monographs, collections of scientific papers, textbooks and manuals, conference materials, specialized journals, abstracts of dissertations, preprints, publications from the electronic library system "ZNANIUM.COM ", IPR SMART digital educational resource, publications from the full-text database of Springer publishing house, as well as from the collection World Scientific Publishing Books.
The exhibition can be useful for astronomers and astrophysicists, graduate students, students and teachers, as well as engineering and technical workers engaged in research and design of optoelectronic systems.
The materials of the exhibition can be found in the lobby of the 2nd floor of the main building from June 8 to August 18, 2022. Abstract: With the help of numerical calculations, an attempt is made to substantiate the hypothesis that it is energetically advantageous for the matter of a cosmic body in its own gravitational field to acquire electric polarization if the mass of this body is large enough. It is shown that if such an effect exists, then it could explain in order of magnitude the observed values of the magnetic fields of space objects and their dependence on the moment of rotation.

Abstract: Analysis of observations of jets from various astrophysical objects shows that the "nodular" structure of matter flows is one of the characteristic features of the structure of jets. The paper investigates the process of acceleration of a single clot – a "bullet" of matter due to radiation pressure. In this case, the motion of a clot in a cylindrical funnel over a hot object, which is the main source of radiation, is considered. It is shown that the acceleration of the clot occurs up to a certain limiting velocity determined by the temperatures and reflection coefficients of the central object, the walls of the cylinder and the accelerated clot. It is important to conclude that the main acceleration of the clot occurs at a short distance (about 1-2 clot diameters). At the values of parameters characteristic of astrophysical objects, the ejected clumps accelerate to sublight velocities, which are observed in ejections from the active nuclei of galaxies and the pecular object SS433.

Abstract: The proposed book was written by a classic of Russian science, one of the leaders of the Soviet atomic program, academician Ya. B. Zeldovich in the last period of his work, together with two then–young co–authors A. A. Ruzmaikin and D. D. Sokolov (now Prof. A. A. Ruzmaikin works in California, USA, and Prof. D. D. Sokolov – at Moscow State University, Russia). The book was first published in English by the New York publishing house Gordon and Breach in 1983. The authors introduce here a number of new concepts of electrodynamics and magnetic hydrodynamics of cosmic environments, in particular, they give an idea of a fast dynamo and a topological interpretation of the conditions for rapid generation of a magnetic field, consider the formation of magnetic fields in spiral galaxies and in convective shells of stars. Together with other monographs published during this period, the book formed the modern paradigm of studying magnetic fields in space. Over the past years, it has not lost its relevance, is widely cited in scientific literature, and is represented in almost all foreign libraries of astronomical profile. However, until now, this book has remained practically inaccessible to the domestic reader.

Abstract: The role of vortex helicity in the appearance of the reverse Richardson-Kolmogorov energy cascade in the three-dimensional spiral turbulence of a rotating non-magnetic astrophysical disk at large Reynolds numbers is discussed. The inclusion of the vortex dynamo mechanism in the evolutionary model of the disk leads to a modification of the defining relations for the turbulent heat flow and the turbulent stress tensor, as well as to the need to involve additional transport equations for averaged vorticity and averaged vortex helicity. It is concluded that as the concept of an inverse energy cascade in spiral turbulence is increasingly confirmed in numerical experiments, taking into account this effect becomes important in modeling the processes of formation and evolution of energy-intensive multi-scale coherent vortex structures in an astrophysical non-magnetic disk.

Abstract: To the conclusion, within the framework of the nonextensive kinetics of the power distribution of particles and the thermal stability criterion for self-gravitating astrophysical systems, a procedure is proposed for including the Newtonian self-gravity potential and the centrifugal potential in a quasi-equilibrium power q-distribution in phase space obtained within the framework of nonextensive Tsallis statistics based on the modified kinetic Boltzmann equation with averaging over an unnormalized distribution. It is shown that if the power distribution satisfies the stationary q-kinetic equation, then this equation imposes clearly expressed restrictions on the nature of the long-range force field, as well as on the possible dependence of hydrodynamic parameters on coordinates, thereby actually determining these parameters in the only way. The thermodynamic criterion of stability of the equilibrium of a nonextensive system is given. The results obtained make it possible to more adequately model the evolution of gaseous astrophysical systems, and, in particular, the gravitational stability of rotating protoplanetary accretion disks.

Abstract: For a fast-rotating gravitating magnetized polytrope with a small index n, a solution of the hydrostatic equilibrium equation is found in a linear approximation with respect to n. The existence of bifurcation points of such configurations is proved in the range of index values 0 ≤ n ≤ 0.1161, in which solutions that are asymmetric with respect to the axis of rotation branch off. The analytical dependence of the asymmetry parameter X on the values of the rotational velocity parameters e, the index n, and the magnitude of magnetic tensions nm is found. The question of the shift of bifurcation points caused by magnetic tensions is considered. The dependence of the acceleration of gravity at the equator of the geq configuration on the parameters e and n is investigated. It is shown for the first time that a series of rotating polytropes with bifurcation points ends at nk=0.1161, much earlier than the values nk=0.83 and nk=0.808 known from the literature. It is shown that this effect is explained by the essentially nonlinear dependence of geq on n and is associated with a rapid increase in the equatorial radius req with an increase in the polytrope index n.

Abstract: The manual contains methodological materials for a laboratory workshop on the use of optical methods in astrophysical research. The first part of the manual introduces the reader to the basic concepts of optical spectroscopy, which are illustrated by the example of a model spectral device – a diffraction grating. First of all, attention is paid to the determination of the main characteristics of spectral devices. The second part is devoted to specific optical methods and devices used in astrophysics: measuring the magnetic field using the Zeeman effect, studying the characteristics of a CCD array and a photoelectronic multiplier. In the last part, some elements of crystal optics and characteristics of an electro-optical light modulator based on a Pokkels cell are studied. In addition, the appendix outlines in a compact form the principles of graphical programming in the LabVIEW environment used in the workshop for processing experimental data. The manual is provided with methodological tasks, designed in the form of laboratory work.

Abstract:Accretion flows, winds and jets of compact astrophysical objects and stars are generally described within the framework of hydrodynamical and magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) flows. Analytical analysis of the problem provides profound physical insights, which are essential for interpreting and understanding the results of numerical simulations. Providing such a physical understanding of MHD Flows in Compact Astrophysical Objects is the main goal of this book, which is an updated translation of a successful Russian graduate textbook. The book provides the first detailed introduction into the method of the Grad-Shafranov equation, describing analytically the very broad class of hydrodynamical and MHD flows. It starts with the classical examples of hydrodynamical accretion onto relativistic and nonrelativistic objects. The force-free limit of the Grad-Shafranov equation allows us to analyze in detail the physics of the magnetospheres of radio pulsars and black holes, including the Blandford-Znajek process of energy extraction from a rotating black hole immersed in an external magnetic field. Finally, on the basis of the full MHD version of the Grad-Shafranov equation the author discusses the problems of jet collimation and particle acceleration in Active Galactic Nuclei, radio pulsars, and Young Stellar Objects. The comparison of the analytical results with numerical simulations demonstrates their good agreement. Assuming that the reader is familiar with the basic physical and mathematical concepts of General Relativity, the author uses the 3+1 split approach which allows the formulation of all results in terms of physically clear language of three dimensional vectors. The book contains detailed derivations of equations, numerous exercises, and an extensive bibliography. It therefore serves as both an introductory text for graduate students and a valuable reference work for researchers in the field.

Abstract: During the past several years, research teams around the world have developed astrophysics-relevant utilizing high energy-density facilities such as intense lasers and z-pinches. Research is underway in many areas, such as compressible hydrodynamic mixing, strong shock phenomena, radiation flow, radiative shocks and jets, complex opacities, equations o fstat, and relativistic plasmas. Beyond this current research and the papers it is producing, plans are being made for the application, to astrophysics-relevant research, of the 2 MJ National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; the 600 kj Ligne d'Intergration Laser (LIL) and the 2 MJ Laser Megajoule (LMJ) in Bordeaux, France; petawatt-range lasers now under construction around the world; and current and future Z pinches. The goal of this conference and these proceedings is to continue focusing and attention on this emerging research area. The conference brought together different scientists interested in this emerging new filed, with topics covering: Hydrodynamic instabilities in astrophysics, Supernovae and supernova remnant evolution, Aastrophysical shocks, blast waves, and jets, Stellar opacities, Radiation and thermal transport, Dense plasma atomic physics and EOS, X-ray photoionized plasmas, Ultrastrong magnetic field generation.

Abstract: High-accuracy Doppler shift measurements and high-precision spectroscopy are primary techniques in the search for exo-planets. Abstract: The article presents the results of using simple neural networks to recognize events caused by the ingress of charged particles into the photodetector of the TUS orbital telescope, designed to register extremely high-energy cosmic rays. Perceptrons with a different number of hidden layers and convolutional neural networks were used to search for events of this type. We describe in detail the research methodology and the difficulties encountered, as well as ways to solve them. The results of the study demonstrate the effectiveness and broad prospects of using machine learning methods for analyzing and classifying data from experiments of this type. This work will be continued to study all data from the TUS detector, as well as data from the UV-Atmosphere instrument currently operating on the Russian segment of the ISS.

Abstract: Recurrent solutions of the population balance equation system of quantum levels of the quantum system are obtained. The mentioned solutions are a generalization of Seaton's solution for the case when there is a departure from the levels outside and arrival at the levels of the system from the outside, and the settlement of the levels is influenced either by the equilibrium field of external study or forced collision transitions. A recurrent solution has also been obtained for calculating the populations of rotational levels of a diatomic molecule in a nonequilibrium radiation field, taking into account external departures and arrivals (in particular, radioactive association and dissociation). The proposed solutions are compact, allow for quick and convenient calculations of the populations of quantum levels of atoms and molecules in various astrophysical problems.

Abstract: The literature data on devices and methods of modeling micrometeorites and technogenic dust particles in laboratory conditions are summarized. A system analysis of these devices is given. The developed algorithm of the program for calculating the dynamics of motion of micron charged particles in the accelerator path for modeling micrometeorites for a personal computer using Nvidia CUDA technology and for a supercomputer Sergey Korolev using parallel computing technology is presented. The data of a numerical experiment to study the motion of micron charged particles in the accelerator path for modeling micrometeorites are presented, the data of the numerical experiment were compared with the results of physical experiments. The ways of modernization of existing accelerators for modeling micrometeorites are indicated.

Abstract: One of the directions of computational astrophysics is the development of numerical methods for modeling self-gravitating objects. These include protoplanetary clouds, supernovae and other clusters of large masses of matter, in the evolution of which gravity plays an essential role. Discrete modeling in these problems with significant density differences and the occurrence, for example, of mobile, adaptive, uneven grids can lead to noticeable disturbances in the balance of gravitational energy. This work is devoted to the construction of completely conservative difference schemes in terms of integrally consistent calculations affecting the medium of gravitational and magnetohydrodynamic forces in Lagrangian variables.

Creating any complex structure – from an ingenious road junction to a quantum computer – involves mathematical calculations. To fully understand the effects of gravity or quantum phenomena, we also cannot do without mathematics. But it seems so complicated and confusing! How to stop being afraid of formulas and fall in love with mathematics? Why is it so effective in the natural sciences? Is there a limit to this, or, on the contrary, for a deeper understanding of nature, you will have to create mathematical constructions that no longer fit into a person's head? All these issues are touched upon on the pages of the book, and their artistic interpretation is presented in a series of drawings by the artist Rostan Tavasiev. It is impossible to find definitive unambiguous answers to many of them. But we continue to discuss them and try to understand how this world works. To do this, it will be necessary to overcome the division into "two cultures": "humanities" and "natural scientists". Let's try to take another step in this direction. Abstract: The objective of this book is to contribute to specialized literature with the most significant results obtained by the author in Continuous Mechanics and Astrophysics. The nature of the book is largely determined by the fact that it describes Fluid Dynamics, Magnetohydrodynamics, and Classical Thermodynamics as branches of Lagrange’s Analytical Mechanics; and in that sense, the approach presented in it is markedly different from the treatment given to them in traditional textbooks. In order to reach that goal, a Hamilton-Type Variational Principle, as the proper mathermatical technique for the theoretical description of the dy- mic state of any fluid is formulated. Abstract:The articles in this volume summarize the research results obtained in the former SFB 359 «Reactive Flow, Diffusion and Transport» which has been supported by the DFG over the period 1993-2004. The main subjects are physical-chemical processes sharing the difficulty of interacting diffusion, transport and reaction which cannot be considered separately. Typical examples are the chemical processes in flow reactors and in the catalytic combustion at surfaces. Further examples are models of star formation including diffusive mass transport, energy radiation and dust formation and the polluting transport in soil and waters. For these complex processes mathematical models are established and numerically simulated. The modeling uses multiscale techniques for nonlinear differential equations while for the numerical simulation and optimization goal-oriented mesh and model adaptivity, multigrid techniques and advanced Newton-type methods are developed combined with parallelization. This modeling and simulation is accompanied by experiments.

Abstract: In 1998 in Oz. The deep–sea neutrino telescope NT200, one of the world's largest neutrino detectors, was installed and put into permanent exposure mode. In order to increase the efficiency of high-energy neutrino detection, the NT200 telescope was upgraded in 2004-2005. The new installation was named NT 200+ and provided both an increase in the effective volume for recording cascades from neutrinos and a significant increase in the energy resolution of the telescope as a whole. This paper describes the device and design of the upgraded NT200+ detector, its main characteristics and the first experimental results obtained on it. The NT 200+ detector should be considered not only as an independent installation for space radiation research, but also as a basic structural unit of the future Baikal neutrino Telescope with an effective volume of about a cubic kilometer.

Abstract: One of the most pressing problems of modern solar physics is the observation of the small-scale structure of the solar atmosphere at different levels (including the chromosphere and corona) and in different spectral lines. Such observations are possible only with the use of large solar telescopes with a diameter of the main mirror of at least three meters. Currently, several large-scale projects of such large solar telescopes are in the process of development or creation in the world. In Russia since 2013 A large domestic solar telescope with a mirror diameter of 3 m (KST-3) is being developed, which is an integral part of the National Heliogeophysical Complex of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is planned that the telescope will be located in the Sayan Solar Observatory at an altitude of more than 2000 m. The choice was made in favor of the classical axisymmetric Gregory optical scheme with an alt-azimuth mount. The scientific equipment of KST-3 will consist of several systems of narrow-band tunable filters and spectrographs for different wavelength ranges and will be placed both in the main focus on a rotating platform and in the Nesmith focus. To achieve diffraction resolution, it is proposed to use adaptive optics (AO) of high order. With a certain modification of the optical configuration, the KST-3 will work as a mirror coronograph with a 0.7 m diameter mirror in the near-infrared lines, and can also be used for observations of astrophysical objects at night.

Abstract: It is proposed to install a large-volume detector filled with a liquid scintillator at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory of the INR RAS in the Caucasus. The target mass is 10 kt. The detector is designed to register natural low-energy neutrino fluxes (up to 100 MeV). In this paper, neutrino fluxes are considered and the expected effect in the proposed detector is estimated. The design and creation of such a detector at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory will be part of a global network of neutrino detectors for the study of natural neutrino fluxes.

The historical place of such scientists as Schwarzschild, Chretien and D. D. Maksutov in the creation and development of the theory and practice of aplanatic systems is ordered. A number of schemes of mirror aplanates are published for the first time. Perhaps familiarization with this material will lead to a new rise in the theory and practice of optical scanning antennas, especially in radar.

Abstract: The monograph discusses methods for calculating new optical systems of telescopes built according to the Cassegrain scheme with a prefocal meniscus corrector. The optical systems in question do not contain non-spherical surfaces that are difficult to manufacture, have high image quality, and therefore are ideal for mass production of telescopes with a relatively small operating hole (150-300 mm). The book includes previously unpublished works by the author on image quality control methods, problems of parasitic light, laser alignment of telescopes, analysis of some schemes of wide-angle eyepieces, calculation of magnifying lenses, focal length converters, afocal correctors and comparison of optical and structural properties of new systems with known analogues. The design features of small-sized serial telescopes with a corrector in the form of a meniscus and a reflective lens produced by the Novosibirsk Instrument-Making Plant are described in detail. Historical issues, including priority, are revealed, materials on which were published exclusively in patent publications and journal articles and therefore were available only to a narrow circle of specialists. A gallery of photographs of celestial objects obtained with the help of new telescopes is given. The work is of interest both for narrow specialists in the field of astronomical optics, and for astronomy enthusiasts who simply use serial telescopes, make or try to make complex telescopes with their own hands. The book will be useful in their work and the master engaged in the manufacture of astronomical optics, and the designer of complex systems of telescopes, as well as the collector and controller of optical parts.

Abstract: The analysis of the current state and prospects of development of dual-use communication systems in space and through space is given. It is shown that satellite communication is the most important element of the information and telecommunications infrastructure of the armed forces, providing reliable management of groups of troops. The advantages of using laser communication systems and the conditions of their functioning are substantiated. The problem of search, detection, guidance and automatic tracking of remote and mobile correspondents in open (atmospheric, satellite and space) optical (laser) transmission systems in communication networks, as well as in quantum cryptography systems is formulated. The theory of spatial search of mobile objects is presented. At the first stage of constructing an optimal object search strategy, false alarms of the equipment are excluded from consideration, the search for stationary point objects is investigated. The strategies obtained are further refined to search for stationary point objects in the presence of false alarms of equipment, search for mobile point objects, search for mobile objects with an extended image. Optical elements are described and the specifics of their application for controlling the direction of optical radiation are disclosed. The technical parameters of the scanning dissector for the organization of electronic scanning of space by receiving equipment along specified trajectories are given. Technical solutions of the equipment for the organization of space-time search for the purpose of entering into communication of the receiving and transmitting complex in atmospheric and satellite systems are given.

Abstract: The Mingantu Spectral Radioheliograph (MUSER) is designed for observing the Sun. It uses the aperture synthesis method to obtain images of the Sun in the frequency range of 0.4–15 GHz. MUSER has an extremely high spatial, temporal and frequency resolution exceeding the resolution of modern devices of the same type. For aperture synthesis, the number of antennas is limited, so in fact a sparse sample of Fourier components is obtained, which corresponds to the situation when the processed image is degraded by a distorting beam with a strong side lobe in the spatial region. Thus, deconvolution, for example, CLEAN, is usually required to visualize the synthesis of the aperture to remove artifacts caused by the distorting beam. The traditional Hegbom CLEAN algorithm is based on the assumption that the observed object consists only of point sources. This assumption does not apply to solar observations in which the solar disk is a non-point source containing complex structures and diffuse objects. In this article, we make the first attempt to use the CLEAN sequential scaling algorithm for MUSER images, including the CLEAN algorithm with variable resolution and the wavelet-CLEAN. The experimental results obtained show that the CLEAN sequential scaling algorithm, especially the wavelet-CLEAN, is superior to the traditional CLEAN algorithm with fewer iterations and improved image quality. We have provided optimized wavelet parameters to further improve the performance of the wavelet-CLEAN algorithm.

Abstract: The book addresses most of the most critical interdisciplinary domains where they interact, or where they will do. A first need is to collect more light, i.e. telescopes still larger than the current 8-10 meter class ones. Decametric, and even hectometric, optical (from UV to IR wavelengths) telescopes are being studied. Whereas up to now the light collecting surface of new telescopes was approximately 4 times that of the previous generation, now this factor is growing to 10 to 100. This quantum leap urges to implement new methods or technologies developed in the optics community, both in academic labs and in the industry. Given the astrophysical goals and technological constraints, new generation adaptive optics with a huge number of actuators and laser guide stars devices have to be developed, from theoretical bases to experimental works. Two other newcomers in observational astrophysics are interferometric arrays of optical telescopes and gravitational wave detectors. Up-to-date reviews of detectors and of spectrographs are given, as well as forefront R&D in the field of optical coatings and of guided optics. Possible new ways to handle photons are also addressed, based on quantum physics. More and more signal processing algorithms are a part and parcel of any modern instrumentation. Abstract: Modeling and Control of Antennas and Telescopes presents the author’s research and field experience in the area of antenna modeling, dynamics, and control. The required spacecraft tracking accuracy of 1 mdeg was the impetus for the new approaches to the antenna controls that use model based controllers (LQG and H¥). Consequently, modeling also required a new approach using system identification techniques. Most of the material presented is new in the telescope industry. The methods have been not only analyzed and tested, but actually implemented, giving confidence in the final result, which is significantly increased antenna pointing accuracy.

Abstract: High Time Resolution Astrophysics (HTRA) is an important new window to the universe and a vital tool in understanding a range of phenomena from diverse objects and radiative processes. This importance is demonstrated in this volume with the description of a number of topics in astrophysics, including quantum optics, cataclysmic variables, pulsars, X-ray binaries and stellar pulsations to name a few. Underlining this science foundation, technological developments in both instrumentation and detectors are described. These instruments and detectors combined cover a wide range of timescales and can measure fluxes, spectra and polarisation. These advances make it possible for HTRA to make a big contribution to our understanding of the Universe in the next decade.
