Space travelers. Cometary astrophysics
The exhibition is dedicated to the study of celestial objects in near Space, such as comets, asteroids, meteors, meteorites. The exhibition presents materials on the origin, composition, structure, evolution of the orbits of comets and asteroids, the probability of catastrophic collisions of the Earth with celestial bodies, research in the area of the Tunguska meteorite fall and details of the meteorite fall near Chelyabinsk, as well as the comet hypothesis of the origin of the Solar System.
The exhibition can be useful for researchers of astronomical and astrophysical specialties, graduate students and students, technical specialists from the field of space activities, as well as for inquisitive readers interested in the deep secrets of the world order.
The exhibition is held as part of the All-Russian Science Festival "Science 0+". During the preparation of the exhibition, publications from the fund of the State Scientific and Technical Library of Russia were used: monographs, conference materials, collections of reports, educational and methodological literature, abstracts of dissertations, preprints, periodicals, publications from the scientific electronic library "eLIBRARY.RU ", from the electronic library systems "Lan", "ZNANIUM.COM ", as well as publications from the full-text database Springer Publishers.

Abstract: The article considers that on the earth-intersecting cometary orbits of the Jupiter family there are both already known meteor showers and groups of meteorite-forming meteor bodies. The classical mechanisms of continuous sublimation of the dust-ice surface of cometary nuclei, which formed many cometary meteor showers, are presented. The mechanisms leading to the catastrophic destruction of cometary nuclei, including dormant comets that are capable of producing large cometary fragments, are listed. The comet fragments formed during the destruction remain in the orbit of the parent comet and form a meteoroid swarm. Bodies from a meteoroid swarm from the earth with an intersecting orbit when crossing the Earth's orbit fall into its atmosphere and create the phenomenon of a meteor or bolide.

Abstract: Based on statistical research, a conclusion is made about the most probable origin of comet SL9 as a long-term satellite of Jupiter. The hypothesis of a possible genetic connection of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SHL9) with comets Oterma and Gerels 3 is considered. Data revealing a possible genetic connection of comet SHL9 with the cluster of asteroids "Greeks" are obtained. Based on the numerical theory of comet motion, the possibility of epic capture is analyzed. The significance of various disturbances in the motion of a comet located in the vicinity of Jupiter is analyzed in order to construct a more accurate orbit of it.

Abstract: A number of changes and additions have been made in this edition. The list of considered short-period comets has been increased to 190 objects. The integration interval has been extended: the evolution of comet orbits is studied in the time interval from 1800 to 2204, and the elements of the orbits are given at standard time points in increments of 5100 days. The joint numerical integration of the equations of motion of the large planets, the Moon, the Sun and the comet was carried out by a modified Everhart method with a variable integration step, and not with a constant one, as in the preparation of the previous edition. This made it possible to more accurately estimate the magnitudes and moments of minimal approaches of comets with large planets, the Moon and the Sun. The sections related to the description of the differential equations of motion of large planets, the Moon, the Sun and the comet are expanded, and a detailed description of the modified Everhart method used for numerical integration of these equations is given.

Abstract: The Monte Carlo model was used to analyze the spectral profiles of C2 radicals in the coma of Halley's comet as observed on December 3, 1985. The simulation results made it possible to reproduce the temporary development of an outbreak in a coma. Abstract: In the work "The head of a comet and a new classification of cometary forms", a new theory of the head of a comet is presented, where it is accepted that not only the Sun, but also the nucleus of the comet itself is the center of repulsive forces acting on a gas molecule moving in close proximity to the nucleus. Based on this assumption, new formulas are derived, the correctness of which is confirmed by the observed material. The new theory of the comet's head made it possible to determine the size and mass of cometary nuclei. In the second part of the work, a new classification of cometary forms is presented, based not only on mechanical characteristics, but also on physical ones. All comet tails were reduced to two types: gas tails – type I and dust tails – type II. A newly developed classification of comet heads is given. This work is intended to serve as a manual for scientists studying comets, as well as graduate and undergraduate students, specialists in astronomy.

Abstract: In this monograph, a model of the structure of the entire Solar System is put forward, in which the average distances of its objects are theoretically established. The hypothesis of the origin of comets in interstellar space, the method of their migration to the young Sun is put forward. The mechanics of the formation of comets around the young Sun of the main comet belt (Oort comet cloud) is shown. The previously unknown property of main–belt comets around the Sun to form groups of protoplanetary belts - zones of accumulation of groups of planets - has been obtained. A justification is given for the fact that in the Solar System planets were formed only in groups and are observed only by groups of planets. The mechanism of formation of a group of planets and the four laws of the celestial mechanics of the formation of a planetary system are given. The accumulation of groups of planets in a group of protoplanetary belts explains the origin of the observed two groups of planets (four planets in each group), the circular orbits of planets, the asteroid belt, the Kuiper belt and the observed pattern of increasing the distances of planets in groups.

Abstract: Within the framework of the gas-kinetic approach, a self-consistent model of a kinetically nonequilibrium near-surface layer of a comet nucleus has been developed. Based on the method of direct statistical modeling with weights, numerical simulation of a two-dimensional unsteady gas outflow from an ice sample subjected to radiation heating is carried out. Estimates of the value of the effective coefficient of sublimation of ice H2O at low temperatures are obtained. The mass transfer in a porous ice and mineral (scattering) non-isothermal medium is investigated by the method of test particles, and estimates of the effective gas release are obtained taking into account the intrinsic rotation of the core for various parameters of the model. At the same time, the kinetic nature of the flow and volumetric sublimation-condensation of volatile components of the cometary core material were taken into account. The effective evaporation rate from under the porous mineral crust is also estimated.

Abstract: Analysis of the spectra of Puma dust-impact mass spectrometers installed on the Vega-1 and Vega-2 spacecraft showed that a large number of unidentified peaks of small amplitude observed in them are associated with impacts of particles of very low mass (from 10 -17 to 10 -20 g). The mass flux of very small particles is several percent of the total mass flux of dust from Halley's comet. The elementary composition of the smallest comet particles is identical to the composition of large particles (10 -12 – 10 -16 d), which is consistent with existing ideas about the nucleus of Halley's comet as an aggregate of interstellar dust.

Abstract: The monograph gives a brief history of cometary cosmogony. The concept of the interstellar origin of comets is described in detail. The inconsistency of the Lagrange and Oort hypotheses is shown. The dynamic relationship of known comets with large planets and with Kuiper belt objects is investigated. It is shown that the radical transformation of cometary orbits is carried out only by Jupiter. Short–period comets are the product of Jupiter's capture. Numerical integration of the equations of motion of 560 short-period comets (CPC, period P > 200 years) is performed in the range from -3000 to 3000 g . The orbital evolution of individual PDAs in the range from – 3000 to 2000 is considered. The main regularities of the evolution of the entire CPC complex are revealed. The evolution of a complex of almost parabolic comets (ACC, period P > 200 years, perihelion distance q > 0.1 AU, number of comets N = 1041) is investigated. The book is intended for specialists in the field of cometary cosmogony.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider a possible solution to the problem of the absence of neon in the Hale-Bopp comet, which consists in the discrepancy between the formation temperature of the comet and the length of its orbit. A model of heating of the cometary nucleus in the Oort cloud region as a result of a supernova outbreak that occurred close to the Solar system is adopted. Contributions from various radiation spectra are considered based on experimental data. The most important and interesting result of the work is the almost complete coincidence of the theoretically predicted supernovae with the supernova discovered by the workers of the FTI im. Ioffe based on isotope chronology methods. Thus, this work solves the neon problem within the framework of the traditional theory of the formation of cometary nuclei in the Oort cloud.

Abstract: Comet nuclei are the most primitive bodies in the solar system. They have been created far away from the early Sun and it is supposed that their material has been altered the least since their formation. Abstract: As this excellent book demonstrates, the study of comets has now reached the fas cinating stage where we understand comets in general simple tenns while, at the same time, we are uncertain about practically all the details of cometary nature, structure, processes, and origin. In every aspect, even including dynamics, a choice among several or many competing theories is made impossible simply by the lack of detailed knowledge. The space missions, snapshot studies of two comets, particularly the one that immortalizes the name of Sir Edmund Halley, have produced a huge mass of valuable new infonnation and a number of surprises. Nonetheless, we face the tantalizing realization that we have obtained only a fleeting glance at two of perhaps a hundred billion (lOll) or more comets with possibly differing natures, origins, and physical histories. To my personal satisfaction, comets seem to have discrete nuclei made up of dirty snowballs, as I concluded four decades ago, but perhaps they are more like frozen rubbish piles.

Abstract: Reactive torques, due to anisotropic sublimation on a comet nucleus surface, produce slow variations of its rotation. In this paper the secular effects of this sublimation are studied. The general rotational equations of motion are averaged over unperturbed fast rotation around the mass center (Euler-Poinsot motion) and over the orbital comet motion. We discuss the parameters that define typical properties of the rotational evolution and discover different classifications of the rotational evolution. As an example we discuss some possible scenarios of rotational evolution for the nuclei of the comets Halley and Borrelly.

Abstract: The work is devoted to the study of navigation characteristics, in particular, the accuracy of navigation of the space system "Firmament", designed to detect dangerous celestial bodies. A methodology and algorithms have been developed to determine the parameters of the orbital motion of dangerous asteroids based on optical space measurements of the "Firmament" system and to assess the accuracy of navigation on these measurements, taking into account the specification of the parameters of interfering factors and practical restrictions on observations. Estimates of navigation accuracy were obtained when observing the dangerous asteroids Apophis, 2008 TC3 and the Chelyabinsk meteorite using the "Firmament" space system.

Abstract: As part of the study of the dynamics of an asteroid satellite, the problem of calculating the external gravitational potential and the gravitational force of an asteroid approximated by a homogeneous triaxial ellipsoid is considered. Three algorithms for calculating the gravitational potential of an ellipsoid are constructed. This is, firstly, an algorithm for approximate determination of the potential, using its usual expansion in a series of spherical functions, taking into account harmonics up to the 4th order inclusive. The other two determine the potential using the Dirichlet formula containing elliptic integrals. One calculates these integrals numerically by quadrature formulas. The other, analytical, uses the decompositions of integrals developed in the work into rapidly converging series. The application of these algorithms to determine the potential and gravity of the asteroid Apophis is considered.

Abstract: The search for asteroids that maintain stable motion in the zone between Earth and Mars has been carried out. A near-Earth object 2013 RB6 has been found, avoiding close approaches to planets for a long period of time. Integration of the equations of motion of this object showed that the dynamic time of its existence in the zone between Earth and Mars significantly exceeds 100 million years. 2013 RB6 moves away from orbital resonances with planets, but is in the secular resonance v5.Further observations of this object are needed to resolve the question of its origin.

Abstract: By approximating the real light curves, the orbital parameters of the system and the physical characteristics of the components of the 1996 FG3 binary asteroid were determined by the model ones. The components are approximated by triaxial ellipsoids. The conclusion is made about the limitations of the model of a double asteroid with a fixed satellite orbit. The translational-rotational motion of the components of the 1996 FG3 binary asteroid was also studied in order to study the stability of this system and the characteristics of the oscillations of the satellite's orbital plane.

Abstract: The energetically optimal impulse trajectories of the spacecraft (spacecraft) obtained by direct methods for the flight from the Earth to the asteroid and for the return from the asteroid to the Earth are analyzed. Conjugate functions are constructed along the heliocentric trajectories of the spacecraft with a message in the nominal value of three velocity pulses in the spheres of action of the Earth and the asteroid. This allows us to investigate optimality in the class of multi-pulse flights. Derivatives of the functional to the boundary times of the trajectory are obtained. They allow us to investigate the fulfillment of transversality conditions for the trajectory. Numerical examples for the Earth-asteroid Apophis-Earth expedition are considered.

Abstract: As part of the analysis of the problem of preventing the collision of the Earth with an approaching celestial body, the impact of shock-kinetic impact on the asteroid orbit is investigated. Abstract: Trajectories for an expedition to an asteroid with the spacecraft staying near the asteroid for some time and then returning to Earth have been studied. A two-stage method has been developed for constructing optimal (by maximum useful mass) interplanetary trajectories for the Earth-asteroid-Earth expedition when flying with high-thrust engines: in the central Newtonian field of attraction of the Sun at the first stage and taking into account disturbances at the second stage. An algorithm for constructing conjugate functions for the case of maximizing the useful mass is developed. Optimal trajectories for an expedition to an asteroid are constructed and analyzed. The principal possibility of carrying out the Earth-asteroid-Earth expedition based on the Soyuz, Zenit and Fregat upper stage rockets during flight in 2019-2022 is shown.

The passive orbital motion of the main spacecraft and a mini-satellite with a radio beacon near the asteroid Apophis is analyzed, taking into account disturbances from the attraction of celestial bodies, the asteroid's non-sphericity and the pressure of sunlight.

Abstract: A joint determination of the masses of 28 asteroids with diameters of more than 200 km was carried out. The solution was obtained based on the analysis of the motion of 74 perturbed asteroids from 49983 observations. The system of normal equations for 472 parameters (28 corrections to the masses and 444 corrections to the orbital elements of asteroids) was solved by the least squares method. The obtained system of parameters allowed us to present observations with an average error of the unit weight of one observation of 0.58 angular seconds. Taking into account the disturbances from these 28 asteroids, the masses of 80 smaller asteroids have been determined.

Abstract: As part of the study of the connections of the δ-Cancrida meteor shower (DCA), consisting of the northern (NCC) and southern (SCC) branches, with the comet-asteroid complex, the structure of the stream was studied using visual and television observations. According to visual observations, it was found that for meteors with a minimum recorded magnitude of +3m and brighter, the maximum activity of ZHR = 8.6 ± 1.8 is observed at the longitude of the Sun 298.5 ± 1.2, while the parameter r of the luminosity function changes over the period of the flux in the range of values 1.5–2.0. For meteors weaker than +3m, the maximum moment occurs 1.4 later than for brighter meteors. For the orbits of meteors of the NCC and SCC branches obtained from television observations, the dependence of the values of large semi-axes and eccentricities on the mass of meteoroids was also revealed. The separation time of the orbits of the δ-Cancrid meteors in the range of meteor magnitudes from 0m to +3m due to the non–gravitational Poynting-Robertson effect is 22-26 thousand years for the southern SCC branch, 24-29 thousand years for the northern NCC branch.

Abstract: The paper considers non-spherical objects with low gravitational attraction, for example, asteroids, satellites of planets and comets. The possibility of carrying out a mission to small bodies of the Solar system of irregular shape is considered on the example of the asteroid Apophis. The authors of the article suggest using a nano-class spacecraft with an electric rocket propulsion system for a long-term mission to study Apophis. The purpose of this work is to determine the necessary costs of the working fluid for all stages of the mission, including the achievement of an asteroid, the formation and maintenance of a given orbit relative to it. When modeling the controlled motion of the spacecraft, the gravitational attraction of the Earth, the Sun and the asteroid is taken into account. At the stage of the spacecraft's motion relative to the asteroid, its gravitational field is described as a superposition of the gravitational fields of two rotating massive points. The paper proposes to divide the mission into two sections for preliminary ballistic design. The first one is an optimal heliocentric Earth–asteroid Apophis flight with the alignment of the spacecraft speed relative to the asteroid. The second is movement in the vicinity of the asteroid, which includes an optimal maneuver for the formation of a working orbit and maintaining a working orbit for a given time.

Abstract: Among the small bodies of the Solar System, there is currently a group of objects that exhibit dynamic and/or physical properties of both comets and asteroids. One of the reasons for such manifestations may be collisions with other bodies. Asteroid (596) Sheila is one of the objects belonging to the main belt comet group. The study of its dust coma allowed us to estimate the relative collision velocity and the size of the impactor body. In this paper, the search for a possible impactor among known asteroids, comets, meteor showers is carried out. No real such body has been found, although it could be a fragment of a hypothetical meteor swarm of comet 232P/SHP. The simulation of close approaches of asteroid (596) with fictitious bodies shows that both an asteroid and a comet could be such an impactor. Based on his positional observations, an estimate was made of the possible change in the velocity of the asteroid (596) as a result of the collision. 3456 observations from February 22, 1906 to the present are given. However, the accuracy of determining the components of the velocity change, approximately 1 mmc-1, was insufficient for a confident determination of this change.

The monograph was prepared by a team of authors under the scientific supervision of Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor B. M. Shustov. The book is addressed to specialists. It can also be considered as a basic material in the preparation of relevant programs for the creation of a national system for countering space threats.

Abstract: The content of the book is the practical application of the general equation of the field theory of E. Borovkov and the theory of relativity of A. From a scientific point of view, it is proved that the Sun controls all accidents, catastrophes and natural disasters through a black hole and it should not be associated with a fatal coincidence. Applied problems with solutions, including the concepts of light splitting and photon mass defect, are presented to describe the phenomena of "Aurora", black holes and black rainbows, and other physical phenomena related to the theory of color and the formation of event horizons. It is convincingly proved that the Sun will never die, but it can explode in about six years, as stated by the research of our luminary by a group of scientists led by Dutch astrophysicist and expert of the European Space Agency Dr. Piers van der Meer.

Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of media images of small celestial bodies – comets, asteroids and meteorites. Special attention is paid to the impact representation of these space objects, reflecting their probable or occurred collision with the Earth. The article answers a number of questions. When and how do these celestial bodies become part of human culture, including media culture? How is the impact discourse formed in astronomy and what is the role of science fiction in its origin and popularization? What are the features of media representations of space threats and what kind of difficulties arise in the communication of astronomers and journalists? How is an impact event constructed in the era of the Internet, mobile technologies and social media? The study reveals a number of trends in the production and reception of the discourse of comet-asteroid danger. Various media and texts are involved in the analysis: popular science books by astronomers, works of art, content of news media and social media. The author comes to the conclusion that thanks to the joint efforts of scientists, science fiction writers and journalists, the impact discourse, emphasizing the risks of collision of small celestial bodies with the Earth, has firmly established itself in the public consciousness. In addition, at present, as can be seen in the case of the Chelyabinsk meteorite fall, a significant role in the creation of an impact media event is played by its witnesses using available digital technologies.

The classification of natural (natural) cycles with the definition of their practical significance is considered. The nuclear-chemical concept of the theory of formation of weather systems was formulated for the first time. Quantum calculations based on the Solar Constant are given. The necessity of synchronous monitoring of the activity of the functional state of the Sun is emphasized. The basic principles of ensuring space security are defined.

Abstract: The effect of a nuclear explosion on a real cosmic body (an asteroid of the "Apophis" type) is modeled using a mathematical technique for numerical calculations of continuum mechanics problems, taking into account the influence of radiant thermal conductivity and possible phase transitions, which was not considered earlier. The essence of the research is the study of dynamic processes that occur in small space bodies that threaten our planet, with various options for the impact of nuclear explosive devices on them. The high-altitude type of detonation of a nuclear charge relative to a cosmic body is considered. The analysis of the main physical processes realized in asteroids after impact is made, the mechanical impulse is calculated. The purpose of the work is to obtain information about the real possibilities of a nuclear explosion to counteract dangerous space bodies, as well as to create a database for a future full–scale Earth protection system.

Abstract: The concept of a space patrol for detecting celestial bodies that pose an asteroid danger to the Earth is considered. Its purpose is to identify and catalog the majority of celestial bodies reaching the vicinity of the Earth's orbit, including asteroids of the Aton group, whose observation from Earth is difficult. The space detection system could be the next step in cataloging dangerous celestial bodies, continuing the programs of their optical observation by terrestrial means. A preliminary analysis of the scheme of the "optical barrier" created by space patrol telescopes is given. The requirements for the observation system necessary for reliable detection of dangerous bodies are formulated, schemes for sighting the optical barrier area for reliable detection of celestial bodies approaching the Earth and determining their orbits are proposed. A comparison of the mass costs of placing a patrol spacecraft in Earth orbit using an electric rocket engine and a traditional chemical engine is carried out.

Abstract: When in 1981 Louis and Walter Alvarez, the father and son team, unearthed a tell-tale Iridium-rich sedimentary horizon at the 65 million years-old Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary at Gubbio, Italy, their find heralded a paradigm shift in the study of terrestrial evolution. Since the 1980s the discovery and study of asteroid impact ejecta in the oldest well-preserved terrains of Western Australia and South Africa, by Don Lowe, Gary Byerly, Bruce Simonson, the author and others, and the documentation of new exposed and buried impact structures in several continents, led to a resurgence of the idea of the catastrophism theory of Cuvier, earlier largely supplanted by the uniformitarian theory of Hutton and Lyell. Several mass extinction of species events are known to have occurred in temporal proximity to large asteroid impacts, global volcanic eruptions and continental splitting. Likely links are observed between asteroid clusters and at 580 Ma, end-Devonian, end-Triassic and end-Jurassic extinctions. New discoveries of ~3.5 Ga-old impact fallout units in South Africa have led Lowe and Byerly to propose a protracted continuation of the Late Heavy Bombardment (~3.95-3.85 Ga) in the Earth-Moon system. Given the difficulty in identifying asteroid impact ejecta units and buried impact structures, it is likely new discoveries of impact signatures are in store, which would further profoundly alter models of terrestrial evolution.

This handbook brings together in a single reference work a rich blend of information about the various types of cosmic threats that are posed to human civilization by asteroids, comets, bolides, meteors, solar flares and coronal mass ejections, cosmic radiation and other types of threats that are only recently beginning to be understood and studied, such as investigation of the «cracks» in the protective shield provided by the Van Allen belts and the geomagnetosphere, of matter-antimatter collisions, orbital debris and radiological or biological contamination. Some areas that are addressed involve areas about which there is a good deal of information that has been collected for many decades by multiple space missions run by many different space agencies, observatories and scientific researchers. Abstract: Lately there have been more and more news stories on objects from space – such as asteroids, comets, and meteors – whizzing past Earth. One even exploded in the atmosphere over a Russian city in 2012, causing real damage and injuries. Impacts are not uncommon in our Solar System, even on Earth, and people are beginning to realize that we must prepare for such an event here on Earth. What if we knew there was going to be an impact in 10 years’ time? What could we do? It’s not so far in the future that we can ignore the threat, and not so soon that nothing could be done. The author and his colleagues set out to explore how they could turn aside a rock asteroid, one kilometer in diameter, within this 10-year timescale. Having set themselves this challenge, they identified the steps that might be taken, using technologies that are currently under development or proposed. They considered an unmanned mission, a follow-up manned mission, and a range of final options, along with ways to reduce the worst consequences for humanity if the impact cannot be prevented. With more warning, the techniques described could be adapted to deal with more severe threats. If successful, they can generate the capability for a much expanded human presence in space thereafter. With the dangers now beginning to be recognized internationally and with major new programs already in motion, the prospects for civilization and humanity, in relation to the danger of impacts, look much more hopeful than they did only a decade ago.
