Stellar astrophysics

   

 

The materials presented at the exhibition cover various aspects of modern astrophysics: questions of the life and origin of stars, physics and dynamics of stellar systems, characteristics of stars and the theory of their internal structure. The stages of stellar evolution leading to the formation of planetary nebulae, white dwarfs, neutron stars, as well as new and supernova outbreaks are discussed. Much attention is paid to priority areas of solar research: the main mechanisms of solar activity, solar flares and unsteady processes, the structure of the Sun's atmosphere, solar wind and interplanetary magnetic fields, modern physics of the solar corona, the study of energy particle flows, as well as processes in near-Earth space plasma.

The exhibition can be useful for researchers engaged in the study of the physics of stars and the Sun, graduate students and students of astrophysical specialties.

The exhibition is held as part of the All-Russian Science Festival "Science 0+". During the preparation of the exhibition, publications from the fund of the State Scientific and Technical Library of Russia were used: monographs, conference materials, collections of reports, educational and methodological literature, abstracts of dissertations, preprints, periodicals, publications from the scientific electronic library "eLIBRARY.RU ", from the electronic library systems "Lan", "ZNANIUM.COM ", IPR SMART digital educational resource, and also publications from the full-text database of the Springer publishing house.

Abstract: The modern astrophysical community bases research on the physics of stars on the principle of their internal consistency and consistency with the main provisions of previously accumulated theories and models. This is the fundamental difference between modern astrophysics and other branches of physics, which base their developments on their agreement with measurement data. To date, astronomers have measured a number of dependencies and parameters of stars, which can serve as a reliable foundation for constructing a theory of their internal structure. In order to reach agreement between the theory and the available astronomical measurement data, it turns out to be necessary to abandon some astrophysical constructions that are generally accepted today. First of all, we need to change the approach to describing the equilibrium of matter inside stars. It should be taken into account that the interior of stars is plasma – an electrically polarizable medium. Therefore, the equilibrium equation of interstellar matter must take into account the role of gravitationally induced electric polarization. Taking into account the gravitationally induced electric polarization of the intrastellar plasma allows us to build a model of a star in which all the main parameters - the mass of the star, its temperature, radius and luminosity – are expressed by certain combinations of world constants, and the individuality of stars is determined only by two parameters – the mass and charge numbers of atomic nuclei, from which the plasma of these stars is built. At the same time, it is possible to explain quantitatively and with satisfactory accuracy all the dependencies measured by astronomers. Taking into account the gravitationally induced polarization, theories of rotation of the periasters of close binary stars and magnetic fields of stars are constructed, consistent with the observational data. It is important to note that taking into account gravitationally induced polarization leads to other conceptual changes, for example, it rejects the mechanism of collapse of stars at the last stage of their evolution and thereby denies the possibility of the formation of "black holes" as a result of collapse. As a result of this restructuring, the physics of stars receives a reliable foundation in the form of measurement data, on which physical science should be built.

Abstract: According to HI observations on the RATAN-600 radio telescope, the presence of a ring structure of neutral hydrogen in the region of the Cygnus 0B1 stellar association at positive radial velocities has been confirmed and it is shown that no traces of radial gas movements in it are imperceptible. In the region of the Swan-X radio source, a connection was found between the distribution of HI and the huge shell previously detected by Ha fibers, as well as with the distribution of ionized gas along recombination lines.

For a neat equation of state and a detailed set of isotopes and reactions, detonation adiabates of helium are obtained. A reduced set of isotopes has been analyzed, which makes it possible to reproduce detonation parameters fairly accurately. The influence of the equilibrium stat requirement in the final state is taken into account. The spatial structure of the Chapman-Jouguet thermonuclear detonation wave in helium during its combustion in the 3α–reaction and in (α, γ) –captures, and in further relaxation to the state of equilibrium is constructed. Gorenje The dependences of the Chapman-Jouget detonation parameters in helium on the initial density are found.

Abstract: The formation of hydrogen emission lines in the magnetospheres of young stars is considered. It is assumed that the magnetosphere is formed by a dipole magnetic field, the axis of which coincides with the axis of rotation of the star. The transfer of radiation in spectral lines is considered in the Sobolev approximation, taking into account the nonlocal radiation interaction. The effect of transferring the degree of gas ionization during motion in the magnetosphere is taken into account, its effect on the emission spectrum of the magnetosphere and estimates of the accretion rate along the Ha line are demonstrated for the first time.It is shown that at low accretion rates of M≲10-9 M⊙/year, this effect can have a significant impact on the model intensities.

Abstract: The cyclotron radiation pressure force in the plane-parallel isothermal hydrogen atmosphere of a white dwarf with a dipole magnetic field is calculated, taking into account the correct expressions for the frequency of collisions in the plasma on these stars. It is shown that a significant decrease in the frequency of collisions in a strong magnetic field leads to an increase in the critical temperature of magnetic white dwarfs, at which the force of radiation pressure is compared with the force of gravity acting on the proton. This means that the formation of plasma shells in the magnetospheres of candidates for radiation disks – magnetic white dwarfs GD 229, PG 1031 + 234 and GrW + 70o 8247 due to plasma injection from the photosphere requires a positive temperature gradient in its upper layers.

Abstract: The relativistic motion of a particle in the photogravitational field of a star at different levels is considered. It is shown that when taking into account the direct light pressure, the elliptical orbit of the particle increases in size. Taking into account the longitudinal Doppler effect and the aberration of light leads to the movement of the particle along a decreasing ellipse, which also decreases the eccentricity.

Abstract: It is assumed that a supernova light flash occurs at the beginning of a star's transition from an equilibrium state in which the pressure of gravity is balanced by the pressure of a degenerate electron gas to a new equilibrium state in which the pressure of gravity is balanced by the pressure of a degenerate neutron gas. Abstract: According to the results of spectral observations carried out on the 2.5-m telescope of the KGO GAISH, the symbiotic nature of the little-studied S-star CSS 1102 has been established. A Balmer jump in emission is observed in the spectrum of the object and there are lines characteristic of gas nebulae (HI, HeI and [NeIII]). The analysis of the energy distribution showed that, in addition to the nebula and the cold component of the spectral class S4.5/2, there is a noticeable excess radiation in the blue and near UV ranges in the CSS 1102 spectrum, which can be attributed to an accretion disk. Photometric monitoring performed on the 60-cm telescope of the KGO GAISH in band B revealed the presence of rapid variability on a time scale of tens of minutes and an amplitude of several percent, which is an additional argument in favor of the existence of an accretion disk in the system.

Abstract: The results of observations of 23 dense nuclei of molecular clouds associated with "cold" infrared sources IRAS in the line J=1-0 of the C18O molecule are presented. The observations were carried out on the 13.7-meter radio telescope of the Purple Mountain Observatory, China. The C18O line (J=1-0) is registered in the radiation of 21 objects. In the approximation of local thermodynamic equilibrium, the radiation concentrations of C18O and H2 molecules were estimated in the direction of the maximum of the integral intensity of C18O radiation, which were (2.5-10.4)·1015 cm-2 and (1.5-6.1)·1022 cm-2, respectively. Kinetic temperatures determined by CO lines for these maxima range from 14 to 45 K. For six objects for which the maps can be considered almost complete, the sizes of the C18O radiation regions ranging from 0.5 to 1.2 pc are estimated. The masses of these objects lie in the range (390-1750) Mo and are close to the estimates following from the virial theorem. The range of average densities of objects was (0.3-1.4)·104 cm-3.

Abstract: Binary stars are natural laboratories in which the study of the motion and interaction of components allows us to find the most important stellar characteristics: masses, sizes, temperatures, internal structure. Therefore, double stars have always been given great attention in astrophysical research. Binary stars with compact relativistic components are by far one of the most accurate tools for testing the theory of the structure and evolution of both ordinary and degenerate remnants and black holes. The unique properties and features of TDS with compact relativistic objects are determined primarily by the processes of accretion of matter from a normal star to a compact component. The huge gravitational energy released during accretion to compact stars is processed into heat and radiated in a hard electromagnetic range. The physics of such processes was first understood and developed in our country in the mid-60s – early 70s of the XX century in the pioneering works of Ya. B. Zeldovich, I. S. Shklovsky and their students. Long-term optical observations of eclipsed TDS in non-circular orbits, conducted by D. Y. Martynov and his students, provided a unique opportunity to study the movement of the apse line and thereby investigate the internal structure of stars and verify fundamental theories of gravity.

Abstract: The problem of the identification of strange stars is discussed. We suggest some characteristic signatures for the search for strange stars: a two-step mechanism for supernova explosions accompanied by the occurrence of strange stars and two neutrino bursts; microstructure analysis in the profile of pulsar emission; and unusual stability in the rotation of millisecond pulsars due to the absence of internal crust in strange stars. The cooling of strange stars is faster than the cooling of ordinary neutron stars, so low surface temperature of pulsars can indicate the existence of massive quark cores in observed pulsars. Low mass strange stars as bursters and/or X-ray sources have peculiar observable features: low luminosity and (for bursters) high recurrence rate, large duration of bursts, low ratio of energy emitted between two bursts and energy emitted during the burst.

Abstract: A strange field of speculation is opened by this phenomenon here we have a star fitfully variable to an astonishing extent and whose fluctuations are spread over centuries. Apparently in no settled period and with no regularity of progression. What origin can we ascribe to these sudden flashes and relapses? What conclusions are we to draw as to the comfort or habitability of a system depending for its supply of light and heat on so uncertain a source? J. F. W. Herschel! We can imagine, at least, that the study of Luminous Blue Variable stars began as the official court astrophysicists of Eridu speculated about a new 5000 years ago first-magnitude star which persisted in their southern sky for several years. After that the topic languished for a while, but now it has been renewed following recent observations by Blaeu (P Cygni, c.1600) and Herschel (1 Argus, c.1840). More soberly, it is only within the past few years that we have begun to understand LBV's and to recognize their coherence as a class. Thus, only a minority of astronomers are familiar yet with this relatively new topic, whose potential implications are of great interest (see below). One purpose of this book, we hope, will be to provide an accessible overview of the subject for interested astronomers and astrophysicists in general.

Abstract: The results of the work carried out in the field of the most pressing problems of physics and optics of solar-terrestrial connections are analyzed. This is a problem of energy in the physics of the ionosphere, considered in connection with the problem of the absence to date of constant space monitoring, ionizing the upper atmosphere of the solar radiation flux. These are the problems of converting the energy of solar flares and corpuscular eruptions into microwave ionospheric radiation. And finally, this is the main problem of modern natural science – the physical mechanism of solar-terrestrial connections in the application to the explanation of the detected correlations in the systems "Sun – weather" and "Sun – biosphere". A single physical (radio-optical) mechanism for controlling processes in the lower atmosphere and the biosphere (including humans) is considered, due to the magnitude of the level of solar and geomagnetic activity associated with ionospheric microwave radiation in transitions between optically highly excited (Rydberg) states of all upper atmospheric components.

Abstract: The work is devoted to the detection of synchronous brightenings of local sources (L. I.) at λ = 2.3 cm according to observations on RATAN-600 by the "relay" method. The methodology and accuracy of processing observations are discussed in detail. The reality of the existence of synchronous L. I. brightenings identified with groups of spots belonging not only to one complex with distances between spots up to ∆1 = 200o of heliographic longitude, but groups of spots spaced across the entire disk of the Sun with corresponding distances up to ∆1 = 80o is shown. During synchronous brightenings L. I. Solar services have registered either bursts of type 20, 21, 25, or (and) Ha-flares.Synchronous brightening of L. I. was detected during zalimbov Ha-flashes.The lower bound of the velocity of a possible disturbing agent is estimated: v > (2 – 2.5) ⁎ 103 km/s. The fact of detecting simultaneous (per day) changes in the structure of almost all groups of spots on the visible disk of the Sun and a change in the polarized radio emission of the corresponding local sources is given.

I. they are observed during an increase in solar radiation in soft X-rays. The lower bound of the velocity of the disturbing agent is (2-12) ⁎ 103 km/s. Frequent manifestations of synchronous brightenings of local sources in comparison with sympathetic bursts published by other authors allow us to refute the opinion about the exoticism of these phenomena.

Abstract: The search for the reaction of the acousto-electric effect in silicon atoms for solar axions arising as a result of bremsstrahlung and the Compton process is carried out. To register axions, a planar Si(Li) detector located in a low-background installation was used. As a result, a new model-independent restriction on the coupling constant of the axion with the electron |gAe| ≤ 2.2 10-10 is obtained, which leads to a restriction on the mass of the axion mA ≤ 7.9 eV and mA ≤ 1.4 keV in the DFSZ and KSVZ models of the axion, respectively (90% cu).

Abstract: The resonant absorption of solar axions by 57Fe nuclei leading to the excitation of the first nuclear level: A+57Fe →57Fe*→57Fe + γ (14.4 keV) is searched for. A Si(Li) detector and a target made of the enriched isotope 57Fe were used to search for gamma quanta with an energy of 14.4 keV. The detector and the target were inside a low-background installation equipped with passive and active protection. As a result, a new upper limit on the mass of the axion mA≤ 360 eV (90{%} cu) was established.

Abstract: The mechanisms of action of weak magnetic, electric and gravitational fields on various types of condensed media of the Earth, including its biological systems, and the mechanisms of occurrence of natural phenomena occurring on Earth and the Sun, including the influence of space weather, are described from a unified position. The root cause of all these manifestations is the internal fluctuation (stochastic) thermal field of their condensed media – electric and magnetic. The significance of a weak external permanent magnetic field as a factor controlling fluctuations of particles, their dynamic parameters and the internal thermal field of a condensed medium is determined. The internal field of the condensed media of the Earth and the Sun, together with their weak external dipole permanent magnetic field, participates in the formation of their own magnetic fields that determine their rotation. This internal field, together with the noise of magnetic, electric and gravitational fields (when the conditions of parametric generalized cyclotron resonance of condensed matter particles are met), is the source of the formation of vortex medium-stochastic magnetic fields and spiral vortices of the particles themselves. Vortex formation in the Sun is the cause of its activity, the reversal of magnetic fields in polar regions and sunspots, etc. And the properties of the high spectral density of the inhomogeneous stochastic internal thermal field determine the high temperature of the chromosphere and corona. On Earth, vortex formation is the cause of cyclones, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. Everything goes according to the law of the Nature of the universe – chaos – order. The book is useful for those who are interested in the mechanisms of natural phenomena and how space weather affects them.

Abstract: It is part of the interdisciplinary course "Solar-Terrestrial Physics", taught at the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics SB RAI (ISSF) to graduate and undergraduates of the ISSF and Irkutsk State University. One of the sections of the course – "Solar atmosphere" is presented. It is assumed that the students are already familiar with the first two sections of the course: "Elements of plasma physics" and "Sun – star". The material is limited to information only about the calm sunny atmosphere. Chapters 1-3 of the manual give the basic, well-established concepts of the theory of radiation transfer, outline the principles of modeling the solar atmosphere, describe the most important processes occurring in the atmosphere of a calm Sun, as well as the principal features of optical instruments that diagnose the solar atmosphere. This part of the course is presented on the basis of "classical" textbooks and monographs published in previous years. The second part of the manual is based on the original articles, and can be revised in accordance with the further progress of solar astrophysics.

Astronomy is far away from being a «political» area of science. But is has enormous political effects – and all of these effects are positive. This book about the international aspects and achievements of the «International Heliophysical Year (IHY) 2007» can be regarded as a compendium of the fertile impacts of conducting research in this eld. The main focus, as the title implicates, is the international cooperation, which has emerged from this grassroots initiative. North and South, industrialized and developing countries have been coordinating their efforts and have been learning from each other in a mutual partnership under a joint understanding of sharing the scientist benets. Abstract: Solar Physics was founded in 1967 and is the principal journal for the publication of the results of fundamental research on the Sun. The journal treats all aspects of solar physics, ranging from the internal structure of the Sun and its evolution to the outer corona and solar wind in interplanetary space. Articles on solar-terrestrial physics and on stellar research are also published when their results have a direct bearing on our understanding of the Sun. That is, results of solar−terrestrial physics are included if they are clearly related to the physics of the Sun or if they use terrestrial phenomena as indicators of solar activity. Articles on stellar research as long as their results have a direct impact upon the understanding of the Sun, its structure and activity, or when solar observations are used when interpreting stellar data. Proceedings of conferences are not published in Solar Physics. However, some issues of the journal may be Topical Issues which are concerned with a specific topic selected by the editors and, in some cases, may contain papers presented at a monothematic conference. All papers submitted to such a collection are handled and refereed in the same way as regular research papers. Contrary to proceedings, the length of such papers is not limited, and other papers related to the same topic, not presented at the conference, can be added to the issue.

Abstract: The Solar-B satellite was launched in the morning of 23 September 2006 (06:36 Japan time) by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (ISAS/JAXA), and was renamed to Hinode (‘sunrise’ in Japanese). Hinode carries three instruments; the X-ray telescope (XRT), the EUV imaging spectrometer (EIS), and the solar optical telescope (SOT). These instruments were developed by ISAS/JAXA in cooperation with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan as domestic partner, and NASA and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (UK) as international partners. ESA and Norwegian Space Center have been providing a downlink station. All the data taken with Hinode are open to everyone since May 2007.

Abstract: As in the days following Skylab, solar physics came to the end of an era when the Solar Maximum Mission re-entered the earth's atmosphere in December 1989. The 1980s had been a pioneering decade not only in space- and ground-based studies of the solar atmosphere (Solar Maximum Mission, Hinotori, VLA, Big Bear, Nancay, etc.) but also in solar-terrestrial relations (ISEE, AMPTE), and solar interior neutrino and helioseismology studies. The pace of development in related areas of theory (nuclear, atomic, MHD, beam-plasma) has been equally impressive. All of these raised tantalizing further questions about the structure and dynamics of the Sun as the prototypical and best observed star. This Advanced Study Institute was timed at a pivotal point between that decade and the realisation of Yohkoh, Ulysses, SOHO, GRANAT, Coronas, and new ground-based optical facilities such as LEST and GONG, so as to teach and inspire the up and coming young solar researchers of the 1990s. The topics, lecturers, and students were all chosen with this goal in mind, and the result seems to have been highly successful by all reports.
